Steps to Save a Life
- For anyone to injure or harm you, including family members, current or former dating partners, or anyone who has or is living with you.
- Ask the investigating officer to file criminal charges against the person committing the abuse.
- Apply for a Protective Order. Through a Protective Order the court can order that:
- The abuser cannot commit further acts of violence.
- The abuser cannot threaten or harass you, your property, or other household members.
- The abuser cannot go near your home or place of work.
- You have a right to report any violations of a protective order. Violating a Protective Order may be a felony.
- This Notice is not a Protective Order.
- Apply for Crime Victims Compensation. This is a program that may reimburse you for costs related to this crime.
- Choose to file a police report or not.
- Privacy: You can file a report as Jane Doe. You can have your address and phone number kept out of all files related to the case.
- You have the right to a sexual assault exam whether you report to law enforcement or not, if you:
- Are at least 18 years old.
- Arrive at a medical facility within 120 hours (5 days) of the assault, and consent to the exam.
